    The Digital Public Domain: Foundations for an Open Culture

    Digital technology has made culture more accessible than ever before. Texts, audio, pictures and video can easily be produced, disseminated, used and remixed using devices that are increasingly user-friendly and affordable. However, along with this technological democratization comes a paradoxical flipside: the norms regulating culture's use ā€” copyright and related rights ā€” have become increasingly restrictive. This book brings together essays by academics, librarians, entrepreneurs, activists and policy makers, who were all part of the EU-funded Communia project. Together the authors argue that the Public Domain ā€” that is, the informational works owned by all of us, be that literature, music, the output of scientific research, educational material or public sector information ā€” is fundamental to a healthy society.     MDL-BASED JOINT DENOISING AND COMPRESSION OF INTRACORTICAL SIGNALS

    Intra-cortical signals are usually affected by high levels of noise (0 dB SNR is not uncommon) either due to the recording equipment or to magnetical and electrical couplings between surrounding sources and the recording system. Besides from hindering effective exploitation of the information content in the signals, noise also influences the bandwidth needed to transmit them, which is a problem especially when a large number of channels are to be recorded. In this paper we propose a novel technique for joint denoising and compression of intra-cortical signals based on the Minimum Description Length principle (MDL). This method was tested on simulated signals and the results showed that the proposed technique achieves improvements in SNR (up to .6 dB over MNML for very noisy signals) and compression ratios greater than alternative denoising/compression methods

    Soft-gluon effects in WW production at hadron colliders

    We consider QCD radiative corrections to WW pair production in hadron collisions. We perform a calculation that consistently combines next-to-leading order predictions with soft-gluon resummation valid at small transverse momenta ptWW of the WW pair. We present results for the ptWW distribution at the LHC up to (almost) next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and study the effect of resummation on the charged-lepton distributions. Soft-gluon effects are typically mild, but they can be strongly enhanced when hard cuts are applied. The relevant distributions are generally well described by the MC@NLO event generator.Comment: 15 pages, 12 postscript figures. Error corrected in NLO plot for WW transverse-mass distribution.
